Atletico Madrid endured a heartbreaking night in the Copa del Rey final, losing on penalties to Real Sociedad.

The match began in stunning fashion as Ander Barrenetxea fired Real Sociedad ahead in the opening minute, registering the fastest goal in the competition’s history.

Atletico responded in the 19th minute through Ademola Lookman, who finished off a flowing move.

Julian Alvarez carried the ball through midfield before releasing Antoine Griezmann on the left.

The Frenchman surged forward and delivered a low square pass which Lookman controlled before firing into the bottom corner.

Real Sociedad regained the lead in first half stoppage time after a penalty was awarded when Juan Musso collided with Goncalo Guedes while attempting to claim the ball.

Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Atletico pushed for an equalizer and found it in the 83rd minute.

Thiago Almada picked out Alvarez in space, and the forward struck immediately from 18 yards to level the score.

Despite both sides creating chances in the closing stages of normal time and throughout extra time, neither could find a decisive goal.

The final was ultimately decided by penalties.

Unai Marrero emerged as the hero, denying spot kicks from Alexander Sorloth and Alvarez, while Musso managed to save only one effort from Orri Oskarsson.

The decisive penalty was converted by Pablo Marin, who sent Musso the wrong way to seal victory for Real Sociedad.

It was a particularly painful evening for Lookman, who had delivered an impressive performance before being substituted in the 62nd minute.

The Nigerian forward completed 85 percent of his passes, beat defenders in one on one situations, delivered several dangerous crosses, and scored a well taken goal.

After the match several Atleti players left messages on social media reflecting their disappointment and courage.

Koke reflected on the narrow defeat

“We were very close, and that’s why it hurts even more. We fought until the end and gave everything for 120 minutes, but we lacked that finishing touch that is decisive in a final. All we can do is thank you, for being there, for believing, and for never letting go of us at any moment. What happened yesterday was another show of support, from Seville, Madrid, and every place that was painted red and white. Thank you. We leave hurting, but there are still important challenges ahead. Our badge demands that we get back up and keep going, and we will do it together. Always, Aúpa Atleti.”

Griezmann also shared his thoughts on the defeat

“Yesterday was a very difficult day for all Atletico fans, but after so many years at this club I’ve learned one thing, we will get back up, I’m convinced. Because we’ve done it before, many times, and because that is the essence of life, to fall and get back up. We still have an exciting challenge ahead of us in Europe, and together we will fight to achieve this dream. Thank you for your support, to the thousands and thousands who cheered us on from Seville, from Madrid, and from every corner of the world. In the good times and the bad. Always Atleti.”

Marcos Llorente offered a philosophical perspective

“Yesterday, football reminded me of what life never stops teaching me, sometimes it lifts you up and other times it brings you to your knees. But everything is information. Everything is experience. Nothing is lost. Everything transforms. And depending on how you endure it, it makes you better or worse. We keep going. More alive, more present, and more grateful than ever. Forza Atleti.”

Musso, who was involved in key moments during the match, remained defiant

“We gave everything we had and this time it wasn’t enough. Faith remains intact and our heads are held high, because the only way to fail is to stop trying and stop dreaming. I have no doubt we will come back stronger and more united. There is still a lot of history to be written, and God has great things in store for this family. Thank you to everyone who joined us in Seville and who support us unconditionally. And congratulations to Real Sociedad, deserved champions.”

Since his appointment, Diego Simeone has led Atletico Madrid to 11 finals, winning six and losing five.

Despite the disappointment, Atletico Madrid still have an opportunity to salvage their season.

They remain in the UEFA Champions League, where they will face Arsenal in the semi final.

Victory in that tie could set up a final against either PSG or Bayern Munich.
