Despite the focus on Isak, a new defender is still on the agenda for Liverpool before the summer transfer window closes.

Most of this summer’s transfer activity and excitement has, understandably, focused on the attack. So far we’ve signed the two exciting attacking fullbacks in Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, an exciting young strinker in Hugo Ekitike, and an unbearably exciting attacking midfielder in Florian Wirtz. When you add the outgoings, or planned outgoings of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Frederico Chiesa, and the ongoing transfer saga of Alexander Isak shows exactly where our priorities have been focused.

Regardless, there is one very important piece of transfer business that must be completed before the window closes on September 1st: signing a center back. The Reds are currently down to just two senior center backs after Jarell Quansah left earlier in the summer, and Joe Gomez picked up a knock. To say we’re entering the season potentially short in defense is not an understatement.

Liverpool have been linked most strongly with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi for several months now, but all has been pretty quiet on that front for about a month now.

However, just this morning a report emerged from The Mirror, that Palace have set an asking price for Guehi. Granted, the mooted £50 million figure is roughly the same price that was floating around a month ago, but it would seem to indicate that there are still discussions ongoing to capture the player’s signature.

It is a steep price for a defender with only one year left on his contract, but it might be the best value that Liverpool can muster in this window. Unless there’s someone coming in completely out of left field, I’d expect this one to gain momentum in the coming weeks.
