The Liverpool Women may have lost after a late equalizer on Sunday against Arsenal Women at Emirates Stadium, but that doesn’t mean it was all negatives. Summer signing Beata Olsson scored once again, making history as the first woman to score in four of her opening five starts in the Women’s Super League, with seven goals now across those starts. Both arms of the club are struggling with their results despite finding the goals, but at least Olsson has been able to produce to keep hope alive.
“We’re not really happy with losing in the end,” Olsson told the club website.
“We followed the game plan in a lot of ways and we fought so hard. Our whole back line. [We had] a bit more inexperienced players but we all did so well. In all ways we deserved a point because we did everything we wanted.”
Liverpool did put in a good fight despite going down 1-0 early on through an Olivia Smith (sob) goal, with Olsson scoring in the 30th minute to equalize and keep the fire alive despite the opposition. It was maybe due to the fact that the defense had some new starters and a new system that they unfortunately gave up that second goal in the 88th minute, but the women worked hard for it all.
“We go into every game thinking we have points to take, and in a game like this we always believe we can come back,” the forward continued.
“Obviously we didn’t give ourselves enough time at the end. Maybe we had a few chances we should have put in the net before that. But I agree, I think we showed some character.”
As mentioned above, Olsson’s seventh goal in four of five starts made WSL history, but the Swede played down the achievement, making sure to mention it is simply her job to score goals. Liverpool are lucky that she can do it well.
“It’s my job, I know I can score and I’m quite confident in that,” Olsson explained.
“So, if I just figure out where to be in the box, I know that people will find me. Mia [Enderby] did an incredible job finding me with that high-pressure moment. I’m quite confident right now that I can score. I didn’t know [about the record], that’s nice.”
Despite the run of form and the lack of an actual win in the league so far, Olsson and the rest of the squad are optimistic that they may be able to turn things around and get out of the relegation zone before time runs out.
“This shows we’ve got a lot more to do and a lot more to take in this league. We obviously didn’t get the start we wanted but from now on I think we have a lot of points to take.”
Liverpool next face Aston Villa at Villa Park on Thursday, December 11, at 7pm BST/2pm EST in the Barclay’s Women’s Super League. The match will be on Sky Sports, if that is available.
