The Reds couldn’t hold off the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool’s last three months have been an absolute roller coaster. First, the club parted ways with Matt Beard. Then came a mazy run of results, including a miracle upset over Arsenal in the FA Cup quarterfinals. But the most recent spate of results have, truly, seen the Reds come crashing back to Earth, with the Reds ending the season with a 1-nil loss to Chelsea.

Losing to the title-winners – with a point gap as impressive as the one in the men’s side of the game – isn’t in and of itself a bad thing. Chelsea are, after all, champions for a reason. But the totality of their results over, say, the last 5 league matches show a team that is struggling for consistency.

Which makes sense given all of the upheaval surrounding the club. It is an incredible disappointment to the talents on the team and, I’m sure, their individual ambitions. It’s also a wild disappointment for the fans who’ve had to follow such an up and down season.

Many have called for increased investment into the club from FSG and this set of results not only vindicates those shouts, but should encourage them to get louder. There are tremendous talents on the team, not least of which is Olivia Smith who has made it into the discussion for the Player of the Season award at the inaugural Women’s Professional Game Awards.

Liverpool are already set to lose a few players this season and saw a Scouser in Missy Bo Kearns leave last year. If FSG want to make good on saying that there truly is one team in Liverpool, they must start with ensuring that the women’s club gets equal investment.
