The winger has admitted he’s open to a return to Italy following a season of limited opportunities at Liverpool.
It’s probably fair to say that Federico’s Chiesa’s move to Liverpool didn’t work out the way anyone would have hoped, with the 27-year-old Italian forward arriving hoping to get his career back on track only to find his chances massively limited.
Across the 2024-25 season, Chiesa saw the pitch for less than 500 minutes for Arne Slot’s Reds, with just 104 minutes across six appearances in the league. For a player who not too long ago was rated as Italy’s top attacking talent, those numbers make for tough reading.
It’s perhaps not a shock, then, that speculation out of Italy now has Serie A clubs sniffing around and thinking he Chiesa could make a return this summer, and Il Napolista today claim Napoli are interested—along with, interestingly, Spain’s Atletico Madrid.
“It’s something to think about this summer,” Chiesa recently told Gazzetta dello Sport when asked about his future. “My family, my agent, and I have a great relationship with Liverpool. The goal is to be ready for pre-season. We’ll find the best solution for everyone.”
The problem, from a Liverpool point of view, might be that the talk is of Napoli and other potential suitors preferring a loan. The Reds, one would expect, would prefer a clean break if Chiesa is to depart as many people believe he is likely to.
Given their move for the player last summer was in part driven by perceived value—a player who not too long ago was rated as Italy’s top attacking talent available for just £12M from Juventus—one would expect, too, that their valuation of Chiesa would be reasonable.
Hopefully, assuming the player doesn’t see a path to playing time with the Reds that makes a second season a tempting option, a new permanent home can be found for Chiesa that allows him to move on quickly and again try to get his career back on track.
