Florian Wirtz is a Red.
Liverpool have competed the signing of 22-year-old German superstar attacker Florian Wirtz, beating the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester City to his signing in a £116M deal from Bayer Leverkusen that sets a new English transfer record.
To call it a major signing would be an understatement. To call it a statement of intent only feels as if it scratches the surface.
The Reds have made big signings before; brought in world class players, or players on the cusp of such. They may not ever have signed a player as highly regarded at the time of his signing as Florian Wirtz is today.
And he’s a Liverpool player today because he wants to win and he believes that the Reds give him the best opportunity of doing just that.
“I’m not coming to have fun, I want also to achieve something,” Wirtz noted in his first interview after being unveiled as Liverpool’s newest signing. “I would like to win everything every year. In the end, we want to be successful.
“Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious. I will improve my own personal level and physical levels—I think everyone knows that in Liverpool the players are machines, really strong and really physical.”
Wirtz is Liverpool’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Wirtz’ Leverkusen teammate, right back Jeremie Frimpong, earlier in the summer.
The reds have also agreed a fee for the transfer of left back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, with the move expected to be completed and announced over the next week. A centre half and centre forward are also expected to be signed this summer.
Having just won the Premier League, these are the moves of a club serious about defending their domestic title and pushing for European glory—a club fully determined to meet Wirtz’ desire to win everything every year.
“I see this as an opportunity for me to get better,” Liverpool’s new superstar added. “This was the right place for me.”
