Despite the imminent signing of Hugo Ekitike in a £79M deal the Reds would still move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak if the striker became available.
Realistically, one would expect that Liverpool’s imminent signing of 23-year-old French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £79M deal would mean the end of any Liverpool interest in Newcastle star Alexander Isak at least for the current summer.
With Liverpool having already signed superstar ten Florian Wirtz and right back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen as well as left back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and with Ekitike now set to join, though, there’s a case realistic isn’t in Liverpool’s vocabulary this summer.
So. Why not make it Ekitike and Isak? It seems highly unlikely. In reality it probably is highly unlikely. But The Liverpool Echo insist their sources within the club are telling them it’s not impossible and that the club haven’t entirely given up on signing Isak this summer.
This comes after Isak’s agent invited further speculation regarding his client by refusing to rule out a transfer this summer and saying he and the player were “analysing all options” regarding his future. Liverpool have previously signalled they would be willing to pay £120M to sign Isak.
With Darwin Nuñez still expected to depart, Federico Chiesa’s future a continuing mystery, and the ongoing rumours linking Luis Diaz with a possible Bayern Munich move it may well be Liverpool could use more than just one more forward by way of Ekitike this summer.
The assumption in most quarters has been that if Diaz departs it would mean signing a winger to replace him, with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo the most frequently mentioned name of late. Perhaps, though, another striker could end up being signed. Especially if that striker is Alexander Isak.
