With Liverpool kicking off their 2025-26 campaign on Sunday in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace and then beginning their Premier League season against Bournemouth the following Friday, there isn’t much time left to put the finishing touches on a squad that looks promising but incomplete.
In defence, following the sale of Jarell Quansah the Reds are down to three senior centre halves. One of them, Joe Gomez, is currently out injured. Meanwhile in attack, the sale of Luis Diaz, pending sale of Darwin Nuñez, and tragic death of Diogo Jota has the club looking at least one player light at the attacking end of the pitch.
The most seriously linked centre half has been Palace’s Marc Guehi while Newcastle’s Alexander Isak remains the dream striker target, but neither deal appears close and so manager Arne Slot was unsurprisingly asked about his options and potential transfer signings at his pre-match press conference today.
“You never talk about players that are not yours,” Slot began before digging into the question. “I can talk to you about Hugo [Ekitike], who we signed recently and has done really well. We are very happy with the squad we have, and there is every reason to be happy about that because we won the league last season.
“Players have left but we have brought players in and the youngsters are doing well. At this moment, Darwin might leave—but things are not signed yet. What I always say, and it’s the same boring answer with any player we might bring in, is I’m happy with the players we have and we have players that can play those positions.”
For the start of the season, at least, with one game a week through the close of the transfer window and then the September international break, a quality eleven and some versatile depth should be enough. If the window closes without another centre half and attacker arriving, though, it will definitely raise eyebrows.
