Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup simply means the team was not good enough to play at the tournament, according to former Super Eagles striker Obinna Nsofor.

Speaking on the debate surrounding the quality of the current Super Eagles squad, Nsofor insisted that qualification remains the ultimate proof of a team’s level.

“If you didn’t qualify for the World Cup it means you are not good to play in the World Cup that is the truth and we should not paint it, it’s simple as that,” Nsofor told Brila.net.

He further explained that even football giants can be judged by the same standard if they fail to qualify for the global tournament.

“If Brazil didn’t qualify for the World Cup it shows you aren’t good enough to play in it, it’s the truth.”

The former Super Eagles star also pointed to DR Congo’s recent performances as proof that qualification is earned.

“DR Congo beat us then beat Jamaica, will you say they are not good enough to play at the World Cup? They are good enough because they played in the qualifiers and now they are in the World Cup.

“They have quality players to ball in the tournament, that’s the fact let’s not paint things left and right.”

Nsofor represented Nigeria at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The former forward played a key role during Nigeria’s qualification campaign for the 2010 World Cup, scoring twice against Kenya in a decisive qualifier in November 2009.
