Super Falcons midfielder, Toni Payne has finally ended a frustrating five-year wait for an international goal, describing the moment as “really good” after finding the net in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Senegal in an international friendly at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne.
The Everton star delivered a composed finish four minutes before halftime to double Nigeria’s lead against the Teranga Lionesses, capping off an impressive performance that provided another boost to the Super Falcons’ preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
For Payne, however, the goal carried significance beyond the result.
It was her first goal for Nigeria since 2021 and only the second of her international career despite becoming one of the most influential midfielders in the national team setup over the past five years.

The Goal That Ended Five Years of Waiting
With the Super Falcons already leading through Asisat Oshoala’s penalty, Payne produced one of the standout moments of the contest in the 41st minute.
A superb pass from young defender Shukurat Oladipo split the Senegalese defence and found Payne inside the penalty area.
The midfielder showed excellent composure, taking control of the situation before calmly firing a low finish beyond the advancing goalkeeper to double Nigeria’s advantage.
The strike was her second goal in 46 appearances for the Super Falcons and her first since opening her international account in 2021.
Speaking after the match, Payne admitted the moment meant a great deal to her.
“I’m happy to score after almost five years, so just really good to do it here in Nigeria.”
The goal was greeted enthusiastically by fans inside the Remo Stars Sports Complex, many of whom have watched Payne evolve into one of the most dependable figures in Nigeria’s midfield without regularly seeing her name on the scoresheet.

Oshoala and Payne Lead Falcons to Victory
The Super Falcons controlled large portions of the friendly and looked sharp for much of the contest as preparations continue for next month’s WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring in the 31st minute after Nigeria were awarded a penalty following a handball inside the Senegal penalty area, confidently converting from the spot and hand the hosts a deserved lead.
Payne’s strike shortly before halftime appeared to put the contest beyond Senegal’s reach.
However, the visitors responded late in the 86th minute reduced the deficit and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Nigeria.

From Alabama to the Super Falcons: Toni Payne’s Journey
Payne’s latest goal serves as another chapter in a unique international journey that has seen her grow into one of the Super Falcons’ most trusted players.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in the United States to Nigerian parents, Payne initially represented the United States at youth level.
She was part of the United States Under-17 team that won the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship and appeared destined for a future within the American national team setup.
However, in 2019, Payne made the significant decision to switch her international allegiance to Nigeria.
Her senior debut for the Super Falcons came on February 18, 2021, marking the beginning of a new chapter that has since seen her become a key member of the Nigerian squad.
Although goals have been rare, her versatility, technical ability and tireless work rate have made her an indispensable figure in midfield.
Friday’s strike was therefore not only important statistically but also a reward for years of consistent service.
Perfect Timing Ahead of WAFCON
The timing of Payne’s goal could hardly be better.
Nigeria head into the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as defending champions and favourites to reclaim continental supremacy once again.
The Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt and tournament debutants Malawi.
Head coach Justin Madugu is using the Senegal friendlies to evaluate his squad, refine tactical plans and identify the combinations that could deliver a record-extending 11th African title.
Payne’s return to the scoresheet provides another welcome selection boost for the coaching staff as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
Another Chance to Impress
Payne and her teammates will not have to wait long before facing Senegal again.
The Super Falcons and the Teranga Lionesses will meet in the second match of their friendly double-header on Monday, June 8, at the same venue in Ikenne.
With Madugu expected to rotate his squad and continue assessing his options, the encounter offers another opportunity for Payne to build on her confidence and perhaps add to her international tally.
After waiting almost five years for her second Super Falcons goal, the Everton midfielder will be hoping the next one arrives much sooner.

Toni Payne Sees Signs of a Stronger Falcons Team
Goalscorer Toni Payne believes the squad is gradually rediscovering the chemistry that helped Nigeria lift the last WAFCON title.
The Everton midfielder expressed confidence that the team is heading in the right direction despite still having room for improvement.
“I think the last WAFCON, we did really well. Obviously we won.”
“So I think it’s just going to be keeping our level, keeping together, getting to know each other better.”
Payne acknowledged that stronger competition awaits in Morocco but insists the Falcons are steadily building momentum.
“And you know, competitions are always getting better every year.”
“And I think just showing today that we’re growing in our connection.”
“It may take us a little bit of time, but we always figure it out on the pitch.”
“And yeah, I think there’s not anything crazy to change, but to keep building on what we’ve already done.”
